Why you should see Mid Ocean Club & Port Royal Golf Course

Mid Ocean ClubCharles Blair Macdonald‘s influence on golf course architecture in America cannot be overstated. Referred to as the grandfather of American Golf, Macdonald studied under Old Tom Morris in Scotland before returning to the U.S. His “ideal holes” or “template holes” are found throughout his designs and his layouts at National Golf Links of America, Chicago Golf Club, The Creek, Sleepy Hollow, and others set off the Golden Age of golf course architecture in the U.S.

In 1921, Macdonald and associate Seth Raynor made the trip to Bermuda to create their island masterpiece. The course is includes iconic template holes. Headlined by its famous Cape hole, The Mid Ocean Club also features versions of the Eden, Redan, Short, Biarritz, Punchbowl, and Leven templates and also features terrific non-template holes throughout. With views of the Atlantic Ocean and Harrington Sound on nearly every hole, Its oceanside 18th is a closer is one you will not soon forget .

Port Royal Golf Course – Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Port Royal is a short drive from Mid Ocean Club but it feels a world away. The course is located on the southwest tip of the island and plays host to the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship every fall. Its routing begins and ends on a central hill in the center of its property and the largest elevation changes work away from or up to this area of the course. But the most dramatic section of Port Royal is undoubtedly its multiple oceanside stretches: Nos. 8-9 and Nos. 15-16. The most wide open to the wind, these holes are a battle against nature and provide thrilling shots to overcome.
