It’s almost time to reheat everyone’s favorite cliché! Get ready, because Masters Sunday is almost upon us. Sunday tee times start at 7:50 a.m. EST, and the leaders will tee off at 9:29 a.m.

Saturday notes

After our second straight day of wall-to-wall golf at Augusta National, the second and third rounds of the 2020 Masters are complete. Masters Leaderboard

  • The leader, to say the least, is world No. 1 Dustin Johnson. DJ put on a clinic in his third round, hitting all 14 fairways as well as 16 greens in regulation on his way to a bogey-free 65. He eagled the 2nd hole, backed it up with birdies on the next two, and cruised through the rest of his round. It couldn’t have been clearer that he was the best player on the golf course. For his efforts, Johnson will enter Sunday’s final round with a four-shot lead.
  • This is DJ’s fifth career 54-hole lead in a major championship and second this season (he led the PGA Championship after the third round, too), but it will be the first time he has slept on the lead at the Masters. Dustin Johnson is one round away from a career-defining win.
  • While DJ was putting on a world-class display, Justin Thomas was struggling. Tied with Johnson at the start of the third round, JT went 3 under through 11 holes. But then he made four bogeys coming home, one of which came when he put his approach shot on 15 into the pond on 16 (s/o ANTIFAldo). Thomas now finds himself a half dozen back of DJ. It wasn’t a complete disaster, but JT will need a remarkable round on Sunday to close the gap.
  • Saturday was supposed to be a big day for Jon Rahm. Seeking his first major title, Rahm finished his second round in the morning tied for the lead. Then, on No. 8—the same hole where he shanked one during the 2019 Masters—Rahm made back-to-back mistakes. Attempting to reach the par 5 in two, Rahm ran a low 3-wood into the left trees. He then struck a tree on his punchout attempt and ended up in the bushes. A disastrous double bogey later, Rahm was suddenly well back of Dustin Johnson. The Spaniard settled for a third-round 72, was justifiably spicy afterwards.
  • Rahm and JT may have faltered, but the international trio of Sungjae Im (68), Cameron Smith (69), and Abe Ancer (69) held their own on Saturday. They’re currently T-2 with one round to go, four shots off the pace. Both Im and Ancer are first-timers at Augusta National, while Cam Smith is playing in just his third Masters. All three have a chance to make history on Sunday, but they’ll probably need some help from DJ.
  • Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy have both somehow clawed their way into the top 10. McIlroy in particular was threatening to make a genuine charge early on Saturday, but then he made a mess of No. 13. Both players are currently T-10, eight shots behind Johnson.
  • He’ll be in Butler Cabin on Sunday, but Tiger Woods will not defend his Masters title. Looking rather stiff, Tiger struggled to find any momentum on Saturday. He’s still a respectable T-20—but 11 shots back of the lead.
  • This observation from Joe Peta is incredible: Bernhard Langer has now competed in a major against both Gene Sarazen (born 1902) and Abel Gallegos (born 2002). In case math isn’t your strong suit, those two people were born 100 years apart!
  • College GameDay at Augusta National, and Lee Corso specifically, delivered a… unique Saturday-morning supplement to the golf coverage.

Shotgun Start: A podcast about Dylan Frittelli with some Dustin Johnson mixed in

Brendan and Andy are joined by Hurricane Shane Bacon for this Saturday evening podcast on the Masters. They discuss Dustin Johnson’s four-shot 54-hole lead, how impressive it’s been, and how it’s likely to bag him his second major. But they also go to the dark places in their minds and try to write a horror story about how exactly it could go bad over the final 18 holes. The entire episode is a ramble, a mishmash, a potpourri of inanity and analysis on all that’s happened so far at the Masters before fielding some listener questions. Thanks to Shane for joining us!
