Good morning. By now, you’ve likely heard that Tiger Woods was involved in a single-car accident near Los Angeles on Tuesday morning. The photos of the scene are scary. After the crash, Woods was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and, according to agent Mark Steinberg, underwent surgery for multiple leg injuries. The Los Angeles Times later reported that those injuries included a shattered ankle and two leg fractures. One of the leg fractures was reportedly a compound fracture. These are obviously severe injuries, but, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Lt. Michael White, they are not life-threatening.

Later on Tuesday afternoon, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and the L.A. Fire Department gave a press conference. The LASD and LAFD were intentionally, understandably vague about many details of the incident, but they did offer some important information. First, the stretch of road in Rancho Palos Verdes where the crash occurred is known as a “trouble spot” and a frequent site of accidents. Second, Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, the first officer to arrive at the scene, said Woods was able to communicate when the deputy arrived. Finally, Deputy Gonzalez noted that Woods was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and that the airbags were deployed.

Our general takeaway from this press conference was that this was an extremely serious accident. “It’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” Deputy Gonzalez said.

We should note that, as is our typical practice, we finished and scheduled this newsletter on Tuesday night. It’s possible that more information about these events has already come to light. Certainly we will learn more in the coming weeks. What’s important right now, though, is that Tiger Woods survived the crash. Keep him and his family in your thoughts.

UPDATE (Wednesday, 12:30 a.m. ET): Tiger Woods’s representatives released a statement early Wednesday morning detailing the surgery Dr. Anish Mahajan performed on Woods’s “lower right leg and ankle.” It’s a harrowing read, but it also contains this reassuring note: “[Tiger] is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room.”
