This week’s Palmetto Championship, held at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina, is a one-off PGA Tour event that replaces the Canadian Open, which was canceled this year because of Covid concerns.

Overall, I would advise caution when either betting or playing fantasy this week. Some top players at the Palmetto Championship may not be particularly motivated because they have the U.S. Open coming up at Torrey Pines. Also, the field is weak, and the course will be unfamiliar to most players. Finally, Congaree is a different type of test than we usually see on the PGA Tour. It will be firm and fast, and it has no rough. It may even play more like an Australian Sandbelt course than your average tour venue.

Add all of this up, and it screams as a big avoid for me in betting and fantasy. I will be saving most of my ammo for next week at the U.S. Open. But if you do plan on playing this week, here are a few players to target:

DraftKings

Vincent Whaley $7,700

Yes, I am continuing to play Vincent Whaley, even at $7,700. In a weak field at a new course, current form becomes an even bigger part of what I look for, and Whaley is in excellent form. He has made his past 10 cuts, including top 40s in the past nine. So I will continue to roll out Vincent Whaley until DraftKings decides to price him correctly.

Ben Martin $7,600

Martin, a South Carolina native and resident, is the 15th overall player in my model. He is above average in almost every metric, and has gained strokes off the tee and on approach in each of his past four events. In addition, he has made five of his past six cuts, finishing 26th and 11th in his two starts leading into this week.

One-and-Done

Lucas Glover

Unlike most players at the Palmetto Championship, Glover has played Congaree Golf Club a bunch and should be comfortable on it. He is sixth overall in ball-striking and fifth around the green. He has also been playing well recently, making nine of his past 10 cuts and finishing in the top eight twice. In this weak field, Glover makes for a great choice.

Harold Varner

Varner is a great fit for Congaree, having thrived in firm, fast conditions before. (His biggest professional win came at the Australian PGA Championship.) In the Palmetto Championship field, he is ninth around the green, 12th on approach, and 14th off the tee. Varner has made eight of his past 10 cuts, and his two missed cuts came down to the last hole of the second round.
