Sweaty season is upon us, folks. Avoid the pleats and the cotton for a while. Godspeed.

The seventh Lee

If you turned off the Amundi Evian Championship early in the final round, the next few paragraphs will be a bit surprising.

Five shots ahead after 54 holes, Jeongeun Lee6 seemed to be waltzing her way to a second major championship title. But after an opening birdie, she made five bogeys on the front nine. Meanwhile, Minjee Lee and Yealimi Noh mounted a charge. Lee shot a bogey-free round of 64, including four birdies in her final five holes, to grab the clubhouse lead. Lee6 fought back with birdies on Nos. 12, 16, 17, and 18 to catch Lee, while Noh narrowly missed the playoff.

On the first playoff hole, after watching Minjee Lee hit her approach inside 10 feet for an eagle chance, Lee6 dumped her approach into the pond short of the green, clearing the way for Minjee Lee to take her first major title. Evian Championship Results

While Minjee Lee is a world-class player, her history at the Evian Championship did not predict success this week. The Australian had had just one top 15 at the Evian before this year and had missed the cut in her last start in 2019. But this year, a weekend 129 with 12 birdies in her final 27 holes extinguished the bad memories.

The victory finishes off a fantastic month for the Lee family. Minjee’s brother Min Woo won the Scottish Open just two weeks ago. With Minjee now in the top 10 of the Rolex Rankings and Min Woo at No. 62 in the Official World Golf Ranking, you’ll be hearing a lot more from the Lee family in the future.

Welp

It had been a few days since Bryson DeChambeau sent the golf world into a frenzy. Unfortunately, the latest hoopla had to do with his withdrawal from the Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19. Jon Rahm also tested positive and will be unable to travel to Tokyo. The two withdrawals leave just three of the top 10 male golfers in the world in the Olympics.

One silver lining: Patrick Reed will replace Bryson as a representative for the United States! Asked about his willingness to accept the last-minute invite, Reed said, “When they gave me the name of Captain America, the fans did, it feels like an obligation and a duty of mine to go out and play for our country whenever I can and whenever I get the call.”

“The fans did.” God bless you, P.

It’s that time of the year

Like the first snow, birthdays, and holidays, Cameron Champ’s time seems to come once a year. The 26-year-old bomber had a good putting week at TPC Twin Cities and won for the third straight season on the PGA Tour. After a so-so 69 to start the 3M Open, Champ shot 67-67-66 to close out a two-shot victory. Champ had four rounds with positive Strokes Gained: Putting, the first time he’s done that in his PGA Tour career. Jhonattan Vegas, Charl Schwartzel, and (of course) Louis Oosthuizen tied for second. Shotgun Start: Captain America goes to Tokyo, Minjee gets a major, and #DoddWatch

This Monday episode is held together by scotch tape with Andy recording from the bar at a golf course and Brendan on a phone from the beach. But it’s here, and well, that’s an accomplishment. The two discuss the big overnight news from the Olympics, where two Thicc Bois are out in Rahm and Bryson. Patrick Reed, who was clear to point out the fans call him Captain America, will answer the call and fulfill his duty to play for his country. Then they get to the golf from the weekend, starting with the Evian Championship and Minjee Lee’s outrageous final round that booked her a first major. At the 3M Open, they reflect on Cam Champ’s win rate and the wild fluctuations in performance. The other major from the weekend, the Senior Open, is discussed largely through the lens of the winner’s last name. They close with some thoughts on Dylan Wu and the Price Cutter, Nacho taking the Cazoo, and a call to place an order at the bar abruptly ending the recording. Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, and Spotify.
