Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Today brings the third edition of our Newsletter Cornucopia, an entire newsletter dedicated to non-Fried Egg golf media content that we enjoyed this year. This year’s selections include articles, podcasts, blog posts, videos, and other odds and ends we found insightful or entertaining in 2021. If you have any other nominations, find us on Twitter (@the_fried_egg) and let us know.

A handful of our favorite written pieces from 2021

Justin Thomas in Hawaii (January 11), Jamieson Cox, One Good Song—After Justin Thomas was caught on a hot mic using a homophobic slur, Jamieson Cox penned this moving account of his experience as an LGBTQ+ golf fan.

Matthew Wolff returns after two-month absence (June 16), Ryan Lavner, GolfChannel.com—Adjusting to life as a professional golfer was tough for Matthew Wolff. Before the U.S. Open, he spoke candidly with Ryan Lavner about his struggles with his game and mental health.

Winning… Because This Time I Did (June 30), Meghan MacLaren, megmaclaren.com—A victory on the Symetra Tour prompted Meghan MacLaren to reflect on the delicate balance of dark and light in the life of a pro golfer.

Ryder Cup opportunity lost, Rory McIlroy and Europe weep over relationships, new memories and time passed by (September 27), Kyle Porter, CBSSports.com—No one did a better job than Kyle Porter of describing and contextualizing Rory McIlroy’s emotional response to Europe’s defeat in the Ryder Cup.

It’s past time to put Lorena Ochoa, Laura Davies and all 13 founders into the LPGA Hall of Fame (October 12), Beth Ann Nichols, Golfweek—It’s understandable that the LPGA Hall of Fame would be tough to get into, but its current standards are keeping out more than a few undisputed legends.

‘Oh no, what are they saying?’: Women in golf reveal the ugly truth about social media (October 20), Joel Beall, Golf Digest—Michelle Wie West, Hally Leadbetter, Amanda Balionis, Kira Dixon, and Cheyenne Woods opened up to Joel Beall about how difficult social media can be for high-profile women in golf. Beall also wrote a can’t-miss piece about his recent autism diagnosis in June.

Greg Norman’s Saudi deal reveals nothing about golf’s future, but plenty about him (October 29), Eamon Lynch, Golfweek—Eamon Lynch is the sharpest writer in golf. Exhibit A: this absolute evisceration of Greg Norman, filed after news broke of the Aussie’s involvement with the burgeoning Saudi golf league.

Some other fun stuff

Our friends at No Laying Up do many things we enjoy, but the addition of Cody McBride’s Downrange Podcast this year has been a particular pleasure. Cody is a great guy, and his discussions of the intersections between golf and military life are something you won’t find anywhere else.

Will Bardwell’s Lying Four is one of the best golf blogs, and this year he added a creative “magazine-style” podcast. The episode on Casey Martin’s legal battle with the PGA Tour was especially excellent.

Finding the Fairway, Season 2 – This Skratch-produced series follows Korn Ferry Tour players as they travel the country grinding for starts.

TXG’s YouTube channel – Look, we’re no experts on golf-equipment media, but we appreciate the honesty and genuine expertise that TXG’s Ian Fraser and Matt Blois offer.

What it’s like to cover the Tokyo Olympics golf competition – The 2020 Olympic Games (of 2021) in Japan were both a sign of normalcy and a reminder that things weren’t quite normal yet. Sean Zak of Golf.com was one of a handful American journalists who made the trip, and we enjoyed this casual yet insightful video about his experience.

Trap Golf – Headed up by Aaron Munn, Wayne Birch, and the ultra-talented Roger Steele, Trap Golf blends golf with hip-hop, fashion, and art to create a fresh voice.

As much as we hate to admit it, the scene at Bay Hill when Bryson DeChambeau flew the lake on No. 6 was unforgettable.

A more wholesome image: Shota Hayafuji, Hideki Matsuyama’s caddie, facing the 18th fairway at Augusta National and paying respect to the golf course with a bow after Matsuyama’s historic victory.
