Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Wallace and Eddie Pepperell (-5) are tied for the lead after one round at Walton Heath. The trio of Englishmen lead a very solid field at a phenomenal golf course, making for great viewing experience.

The European Tour is absolutely dominating American golf right now. The Euros won the Ryder Cup and have rolled right into the Old Course, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, and Walton Heath. What an unbelievable stretch of golf for the folks across the pond.

The most recent report on an event that’s losing steam after a series of missteps is that no tickets will be sold and there will be no public access. So they come up with some fake WWE-style controversies and conflicts that could put this thing back on the hype train. How To Lose a Viewer in 10 Days

It was reported on Thursday that no public tickets will be made available for the Tiger/Phil match in Las Vegas next month. Only a “small gathering of sponsors and VIPs” will have access to the pair as they traverse Shadow Creek.

Compared to the hype I felt at the onset of this idea, I could not be less excited for this match. It is going to be a pay-per-view broadcast with one player who is not at the top of his game, and they aren’t putting up their own money? Pass. Oh, and they aren’t going to allow a crowd to come watch these two legends play each other. I guess that makes sense for safety’s sake, but it absolutely sucks for the fans.

Can’t wait for one of them to make a 30-footer on 18 to win the match and get a modest golf clap from the 10 people watching. Gonna be sick…

Campus Update

Welcome back from fall break, class is in session.

A couple of schools that I have been wary of this year came out and knocked my socks off this week. The first was an extremely young Illinois team that went to Notre Dame and won the Fighting Irish Invitational by 10 shots over Georgia Southern. The Illini shot -44 over the three rounds, never using a score worse than 69. They now have two victories on the season. Steven Fisk of Georgia Southern won the event individually at -15. He needed birdies on his final two holes to hold off UNC’s Ryan Gerard, who shot a final-round 61.

The other team that impressed this weekend was the Pepperdine Waves. Starting the final round of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational 6 shots back of powerhouse California, the Waves went out and shot a school record 262 (61-65-67-69) to beat Cal by 11. RJ Manke shot rounds of 65-66-61 to win the individual portion by 4-over All-American Collin Morikawa.
