In what feels like the 12th designated event of the 2023 PGA Tour season, the top players visit Quail Hollow this week for the Wells Fargo Championship. Quail Hollow is a very straightforward test of golf. What you see is what you get. Past champions at this venue include current stalwarts (Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Max Homa, and Jason Day) but also the likes of some longshots in James Hahn, Derek Ernst and J.B. Holmes. This week’s formula for success is pretty simple: driving distance and approach play from 175-plus yards. Let’s take a look at three players who fit this mold:

Cameron Young, $8,700

Cameron Young keeps on knocking on victory’s door and will eventually be let into the house. This may well be the week as Quail Hollow is the perfect fit for him. He ranks second in driving distance, fourth in birdies, fifth off the tee, and 10th in approach from 175-plus yards. Now yes, I realize he has issues chipping and at times can have a balky putter but this course has given us many winners with that similar set of strengths and weaknesses. He has eight top-three finishes in the last 13 months but is priced at $8,700 in a field missing the best two players in the world.

Wyndham Clark, $7,800

Clark is a cheaper, lesser-known version of Cameron Young. He ranks fourth in driving distance and 10th in approach. He also helps our DraftKings score with the 13th highest birdie rate. He hasn’t missed a cut since October. During those 15 events, he has finished top 40 in all but one and has recorded five top-ten finishes.

Cameron Davis, $7,500

Davis dealt with illness for the first few months of 2023, causing some unexpected poor play. Now that he is back healthy, his game is trending in the right direction. He finished sixth at The Players and seventh at the RBC Heritage, which had stronger fields and were also at courses that fit Davis’s game much less than this week’s venue. Davis ranks sixth in driving distance and fourth in approach from 175-plus yards. The $7,500 number is a great price for a player with his upside.
