It was an emotional weekend for Max Homa as the 28 year-old won for the first time on the PGA Tour at Quail Hollow. Homa outlasted a world-class leaderboard this weekend and beat Joel Dahmen by three at the finish. Speaking of the Finnish, Mikko Korhonen won a playoff on the European Tour while the Web.com and LPGA went to extra holes as well.

To the Max

The Wells Fargo Championship witnessed a putting clinic from its champion on Sunday. Max Homa started the day tied for the lead before shooting 67 to close out his first career PGA Tour win. Homa’s 67 was tied for the lowest score of the day, and he led the field with more than four strokes gained putting. Leaderboard

Max Homa has had a yo-yo of a career to this point. The Southern California native has alternated between PGA Tour and Web.com Tour memberships each year since 2014, but now he has some job security. While he has had some consistency issues in the past, no one can question Max’s talent. A former NCAA Champion and Walker Cupper, Homa is a breath of fresh air for the game of golf. He loves to interact with fans on Twitter and is very well regarded among his peers. It took six years and 69 events (nice), but Homa has finally reached the mountaintop.

Notes

  • Joel Dahmen put on another impressive performance this week on his way to a solo second at Quail Hollow. Dahmen was fourth in Strokes Gained: Approach this week and now has six top-20 finishes on the season.

  • Justin Rose notched yet another top 10 with a third at the Wells Fargo. The Englishman rode a hot putter to his sixth top 10 in just nine events this year.

  • Rickie Fowler, Jason Dufner, Paul Casey, and Sergio Garcia all tied for fourth this weekend. Dufner was the only one of the group to have a chance on Sunday, but a final-round 73 derailed his hopes.

  • Despite three bogeys over his final nine holes, Jhonattan Vegas still managed to secure his third top 10 of the year. After a down year in 2018, Vegas seems to be back on track in 2019.

  • Playing on a sponsor’s invite, Doc Redman finished T-18. The 2017 U.S. Amateur champion made four bogeys over his final seven holes, ending his chances of earning a start next week via a top-10 finish.

Volvo China Open

It was a birdie-fest in China this weekend. Nine players reached -15 or better in the Volvo China Open, and Mikko Korhonen emerged as the victor. Korhonen defeated France’s Benjamin Herbert with a birdie on the first playoff hole to win for the second time in the last two seasons. His win will move him to 84th in the OWGR, a career best for the player from Finland. Jorge Campillo also continued his strong play, finishing one shot out of the playoff while notching his fifth top-three finish in his last six events. Leaderboard

Nashville hot

It was a couple weeks later than Robby Shelton would have liked, but the Alabama graduate won his first Web.com Tour event of the season in Nashville. Shelton birdied the 72nd hole and then defeated Scottie Scheffler in a playoff for the victory. He now has a runner-up, a T-4, and a win in his last three starts.

Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler shot a final-round 64 to force extra holes. Despite losing the playoff, Scheffler has still had a phenomenal season and sits third in the season-long points race. Chase Seiffert continued his strong recent play on his way to a T-4 finish. Quick Hooks

Despite shooting a final-round 75, Sei Young Kim emerged as the winner of the LPGA Mediheal Championship on Sunday. Kim beat Bronte Law and Jeongeun Lee in a playoff to seal the victory.  Leaderboard

Brooks Koepka took to photoshop this weekend. Responding to Brandel Brandel Chamblee saying that only Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy can currently compete with Tiger, Brooksy showed his true feelings for the Golf Channel analyst.

Wells Fargo runner-up Joel Dahmen gave some refreshingly candid and interesting interviews over the weekend. Golf.com’s Dylan Dethier compiled a number of fun quotes from Dahmen here.

Shotgun Start: Homa’s breakthrough, Brooks-Brandel beef, and Quail Hollow’s spot on the schedule

We return from the weekend with a double worse-for-the wear feature, which means you may want to just set this episode to 1.5 or 2x speed at the start. We run through the results and commend Max Homa’s work to get to the point of winning on the PGA Tour. We also use that as a jump off to contrast it with some players who may be the beneficiary of repeated exemptions. Then there’s a wild divergence on the Minneapolis business community as well as this Quail Hollow event getting eaten by some of the elevated status titles and WGCs that line the schedule. After the Kentucky Derby controversy, we put out a few golf hypotheticals that might come close to comparing to that overturn and ruling at the sport’s biggest event. In news, we hit on the joy of the Brooks Koepka and Brandel Chamblee beef that reignited with Brooksy’s weekend photoshop work. We sign off with the weird story of Steve Sticker being used for a charity outing scam and ponder who you would choose for such a scam to make it both believable enough and also draw interest for your outing. Listen on iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify
