Howdy! Who needs to go to the newly reopened Disney World (seriously, please don’t go) when roller coasters like the Workday Charity Open are available!

… and exhale

It wasn’t easy, but Collin Morikawa fought his way to his second PGA Tour victory at the Workday Charity Open this weekend. Three shots back of Justin Thomas on the 16th tee at Muirfield Village Golf Club, Morikawa played the final three in -1 while JT stumbled with bogeys on 16 and 18. Morikawa had some trouble of his own, barely lipping in a par putt on 18 to get into the playoff. The pair traded haymakers on the first playoff hole, and Morikawa sealed the deal two holes later. Collin Morikawa has two PGA Tour wins, is an elite ball-striker, and is up to No. 16 in the Official World Golf Ranking. His only weakness is the flatstick, and although he made great putts on 15, 17, and the first playoff hole, he almost missed that shorty on the 72nd hole.

But let’s remember: he’s 23! Nervy short putts are often a symptom of nothing more than inexperience. So let’s wait and see. We can already be fairly confident that Morikawa will be a force for years to come. And if he figures out the putter, he could be generational.

Uh, where’s the golf?

Because of afternoon thunderstorms in the forecast, the final round of the Workday Charity Open was pushed up to Sunday morning. CBS coverage was not. After two hours on Golf Channel, the action was available only on CBS’s streaming service. This isn’t the broadcast team’s fault, but if the contract created this situation, sure seems like a lame contract! Imagine if an NFL game was pushed up four hours and not shown on live TV. It would be anarchy.

Up and down

Justin Thomas put himself through the ringer on Sunday. He started with a three-shot lead, fell three shots behind after seven holes, jumped three shots ahead through 16, and made a 50-foot bomb on the first playoff hole before falling short. There were times when it felt like he had no chance of winning, and there was a nine-hole stretch when it felt like he couldn’t lose. Ultimately, JT let this one slip away. “It’s completely unacceptable to give up a three-shot lead,” he said. “I’m disappointed in myself.”

He shouldn’t be too hard on himself. He’s No. 3 in the OWGR and No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings, and he has to be the favorite going into this week’s encore at Muirfield Village.

Quick Hooks

Morikawa now has two career victories and one career missed cut. He’s the first player to win twice on the PGA Tour before missing two cuts as a pro since Tiger Woods. But Tiger won 43 times before his second MC. Collin has some work to do. (via Justin Ray)

Viktor Hovland finished third at Muirfield Village and led the field in SG: Tee-to-Green. In fact, Hovland has led the field in SG: Tee-to-Green three weeks in a row! That’s the first time anyone has accomplished that feat since the strokes gained stat started being tracked in 2004. (Also via Justin Ray. He’s the man.)

Chase Seiffert earned his first career top five on tour with his solo fourth at the Workday Charity Open. An unconventional birdie on the par-5 11th capped off the best week of his PGA Tour career.

A weekend score of 128 gave David Lipsky his first career Korn Ferry Tour win on Sunday at the TPC San Antonio Challenge. Lipsky won by four shots over Canadian Taylor Pendrith. Results

Marc Warren birdied two of his final four holes to win the Austrian Open, co-sanctioned by the Challenge and European tours. In a fun twist, Warren won while carrying his own bag. His caddie had failed to meet Covid-19 guidelines. Results

Shotgun Start: Charity Open madness, Tape Delay sadness, and WGC Swampass badness

The PGA Tour is not only Back on the Tee, it is on an incredible hot streak in this Return to Golf. Brendan and Andy offer their initial reactions to another fantastic Sunday, the best Sunday since golf Returned and maybe the best of the season. They discuss Collin Morikawa’s incredible play on a day of leaderboard jostling with Justin Thomas and whether Morikawa has greater staying power compared to some of his young contemporaries. They question if JT has a little scar tissue given some of the Sunday finishes this year or if there is a Curse of Geronimo. Muirfield Village’s first week is also praised and week two, with the addition Beefy Bryson, is pondered. There is, of course, a segment on the fact that this incredible action was streaming only and the fact that any other major sport would not abide that. Marc Warren’s win is praised as is Chicago’s own David Lipsky’s win on the KFT. News focuses on a troubling development at the WGC Swampass, where the Tour is altering its rules to try and fill out the field. Lastly, Andy argues mason jars should and will replace all cups.
