Why you should see Mountain Lake
Private to its membership and their guests, Seth Raynor‘s Mountain Lake is one of the few clubs in America that remains largely hidden to the outside world. It was founded in the last 1910s by the same developer who built Fishers Island in the 1920s with Raynor in tow, a testament to the work completed at Mountain Lake.
The golf course is a classic Raynor, featuring numerous template holes in a Redan, Short, Double Plateau, and Biarritz, but it also includes many Raynor one-offs which are often our favorite. The course overcomes its relatively flat Florida landscape through the use of bold Raynor features, most often seen in his green complexes and bunker style. It may be in the Sunshine State, but it’s the furthest thing from Florida golf. The club was most recently worked on by architect Brian Silva around the turn of the century as they restored greens and bunkers back to Raynor’s original plan.
What makes Mountain Lake really special is that it isn’t just a golf course, it’s an experience. And a rare one at that. Walking off the 18th green, guests are just steps away from their rooms in the Colony House and can walk right upstairs to freshen up for a drink and dinner. You never have to leave the premises, and you’re not going to want to.
Travel Information
All participants will stay on site at Mountain Lake in their historic Colony House. Built in 1916, the Colony House is on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a stunning place to call home for the evening. The Mediterranean Revival style building overlooks the club’s 18th hole and Mountain Lake. This is a special and rare opportunity and we are very excited to bring a group to Mountain Lake to experience this exclusive club.
Those flying in have multiple airports to choose from. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is just over an hour from Mountain Lake and Tampa International Airport (TPA) is about 90 minutes from the club.
If you wanted to tack on a trip to an additional Florida city, you can drive to West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Daytona Beach, and Gainesville in under three hours. Mountain Lake is as central as they come.
Local Sites and Things to Do
Want to go big? Disney World is an hour door to door from Mountain Lake. Drop off the family on Wednesday morning and you can be back Thursday afternoon.
A big golf trip can easily be put together if you want to swing over to visit the Streamsong Resort. You can get from Mountain Lake to Streamsong in under an hour by car.
For those flying into Orlando, a quick nine holes at the Winter Park 9 is an easy add-on. We will be organizing a meetup as well.
