It’s officially turkey season, folks! But before we dive headfirst into a pile of mashed potatoes, we have some golf to recap.

Sei Young Kim Appreciation Day

In her first appearance since her victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Sei Young Kim put on another clinic at the Pelican Women’s Championship. After blitzing Pelican Golf Club to the tune of 67-65-64 through Saturday, Kim cruised to a three-shot victory on Sunday with a 70. Pelican Women’s Championship Results

There’s a strong argument that Sei Young Kim has played the best golf of anyone, man or woman, over the past 18 months. In 26 LPGA starts, Kim has piled up five victories, a major championship, and 14 top 10s. That stretch included a seven-month layoff during which she played solely on the Korean LPGA Tour, where she recorded another three top-six finishes.

With world No. 1 Jin Young Ko opting out of many events this fall for Covid precautions, Sei Young Kim has made some serious inroads in the Rolex Rankings. Kim may well take over the top spot if she maintains her strong form into the new year. Either way, she’s in the midst of the best stretch of her career, and it has been fun to watch.

Streb and flow

For the sixth consecutive year, the RSM Classic ended in a playoff. After birdieing the 71st hole to tie Kevin Kisner, Robert Streb parred the 72nd, sending the pair back out on the course. Streb made a great par save on the first playoff hole and hit the shot of the tournament on the second. His birdie was good enough for his second RSM Classic title, which also happens to be his second career PGA Tour win. Streb now has full PGA Tour status for the first time in four years. But more importantly, we’re assuming this makes the Oklahoman an honorary member of the Sea Island Mafia. RSM Classic Results

Joachim Hansen shot 64-67 on the weekend to come from behind and win the European Tour’s Joburg Open by two shots over long-hitting Wilco Nienaber. Results

At the RSM Classic, Kevin Kisner seemed all but assured of victory before Streb’s strong closing stretch. Kisner is now 0-5 for his career in PGA Tour playoffs.

Camilo Villegas had a strong week at Sea Island, finishing T-6 and earning a start at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. It was his first top 10 on the PGA Tour since 2017. This year has been a tough one for Villegas and his family; on July 22, their 22-month-old daughter Mia died after a battle with cancer. We hope Villegas’s strong play continues.

David Pastore, Bryson Nimmer, and Carson Young were the top three points earners on the LOCALiQ Tour this year, so each earned a sponsor exemption into a 2021 PGA Tour event. Pastore will play in the Barbasol Championship, Nimmer the RBC Canadian Open, and Young the Puerto Rico Open.

Newly minted pro Takumi Kanaya took the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament on the Japan Tour this weekend. The win moves him to 126th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Results

Shotgun Start: The Blueberry Brigade, the Road to Mallorca, and a Streb Quiz

It’s a Funday Monday/Taco Tuesday Eve smorgasbord on the Shotgun Start. There’s some initial NFL thoughts and a debate over the golf equivalent of winning the NFC East this year. Then they get to the golf, starting with Ondrej Lieser and his display rack trolley winning on the Challenge Tour and its Road to Mallorca standings. There’s a Takumi Kanaya appreciation segment and a discussion about Kyle Reifers’s pasta sauce sponsor. Then they get to the Pelican Championship in Florida, where speedy Sei Young Kim made an argument as the best golfer in the world. There were also Pelican members in vibrant blue coats. The RSM Classic outcome is an excuse for a Robert Streb quiz as well as several other smaller inanities, like which PGA Tour hotbed would you choose (e.g. Sea Island) to live in. The Joburg Open is also recapped after a lengthy chat on merchandise and the concept of Black Friday now lasting a month. Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, and Spotify.
