Why you should see Old Barnwell

Designed by Brian Schneider and Blake Conant, Old Barnwell is a glimpse at what the next generation of golf course design may look like. The course is filled with above-grade features that come in all shapes and sizes. Mounds both in fairways and around bunkers, as well as large green contours, rise up in a brash manner that is intimidating in spots while still being pleasing to the eye. But while some of the individual holes are certainly jaw-dropping, the manner in which the routing uses the land is equally stunning. Players are continually faced with different challenges throughout the round as elevation changes and changes in direction keep them guessing. Schneider and Conant also used a good amount of variety in their green complexes, mixing in sets of greens that are extremely bold alongside ones that are more subdued. Old Barnwell and its architects are on the leading edge of golf course design. That we get to spend a day there is a real thrill.

Why you should see Aiken Golf Club

Steps from downtown, the Aiken Golf Club is a golf course whose welcoming atmosphere perfectly matches its hometown. The course measures just 5,800 yards from the back tees and yet it presents all the challenge you can hope for. Jim McNair Jr., Aiken’s architect and owner, transformed the golf course in the late 1990s, infusing a tremendous amount of strategy and intrigue into the small property. His attention to detail and willingness to take risks allowed him to use the course’s undulating property to his advantage, even if it was his maiden voyage as a golf architect. Today, the course features design elements that few would be brave enough to build. From the incredible double-green that makes up the 1st and 17th holes, to the driveable 14th and 15th holes, AGC always keeps you on your toes and eager to hit the next shot. Aiken Golf Club is pure joy, just as Jim McNair Jr. hoped it would be.
