The embarrassment of golf riches on Long Island is greater than perhaps any other area in the United States. Almost everywhere you turn, there’s a brilliant course waiting to reaffirm its place in golf course architecture lore, whether that’s at the top of some well-publicized ranking or among the hipsters looking for the more hidden gems. One of the finest on Long Island can be found at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, a Devereux Emmet original that has been restored by Gil Hanse. Andy visited it in the summer of 2023 and was simply blown away and immediately wanted to add it to a potential Fried Egg Golf events lineup. So in August 2024, we get to experience the club with a group of golf aficionados at the first edition of The Emmet.

Why you should see St. George’s
Friend to C.B. Macdonald in the early 1900s, Devereux Emmet had a front row seat to some of the finest architecture ever built. With his work at St. George’s, Emmet added yet another showstopper to the region. The club sits on a rumpled piece of property that the architect took full advantage of while routing the golf course. And like his friends Macdonald and Walter Travis, Emmet was not afraid to build harsh features. His use of oddly shaped bunkers create significant hazards and his greens demand precision. Yes, St. George’s is located in a crowded neighborhood, but its architecture makes it one of the best houses on the block.
In the area
Whether you’re a New Yorker who wants to make a day trip or you just want to visit Long Island, St. George’s is accessible (again, factor in NYC-area standards for that word) for almost everyone. The club is an hour from both LaGuardia and JFK International Airports and roughly the same distance away from the Hamptons, where we’re told there is some good golf. If you’re looking to tie in some other golf to the trip, you have more than a few options nearby. Some terrific public choices include the Bethpage courses, or, for those willing to make more of a drive, Montauk Downs is worth your time. Plus, if you’re looking for a time to cash in on a connection to a private club in the region, this would be it. For those looking to come with a spouse and prefer to play less golf, there is more than enough to do either out on the island in the heart of August. Or stay in the city with all that obviously has to offer. Maybe even see a Mets game – they’re in town and they’ll still be in it come August, right?
Why “The Emmet”?
With names like Macdonald, Raynor, Ross, and MacKenzie to compete with, Devereux Emmet is not often one of the first names that comes up in discussions of the Golden Age of golf course architecture. Our event pays homage to one of the more underappreciated architects.
