Saturday at the U.S. Open Club TFE Comment Section

Based on the last two days, it’s hard not to get our hopes up about what we’ll see this weekend at Pinehurst No. 2. The course was very crispy on Friday afternoon and the Saturday setup does not seem easy so far. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, this is the era of John Bodenhammer sensible U.S. Open setups. Still, Pinehurst is in prime condition to be pushed to the edge.

2. What will the leading score be at the end of Saturday?

A shocking stat

The last two days marked the first time in Scottie Scheffler’s professional career that he recorded back-to-back over-par rounds. That’s unfathomable. As Ben Coley noted, Rory achieved that in his 12th professional start. This was Scheffler’s 140th. I’m not even sure what to say about that. Going to need a minute to process. – Will Knights

Devilish pin on No. 9

Really hoping the guys playing in the final groups made note of how difficult the 167-yard par-3 9th was playing early in the day. Just three of the first 20 players hit the green in regulation, many of which came up short for fear of going long. It’s quite the change from yesterday’s back-left pin, although that one was also incredibly difficult. – Will Knights

Bryson’s big day

Joseph, Andy, and Brendan will have more in tonight’s newsletter and Shotgun Start, but that was a hell of a day for Bryson. After a shaky start, he went on a heater that nearly put this tournament to bed early. The narrative that he is becoming a fan favorite seems to be building upon itself on the ground as well as cheers continue to grow larger for the big guy. The pressure of a U.S. Open Sunday, Pinehurst No. 2 conditions, and Bryson is going to make for a fascinating watch. – Will Knights
