Streamsong Announces New Course from David McLay Kidd

In what may not be the best-kept secret if you follow these things closely, Streamsong officially announced plans for a new course designed by David McLay Kidd. The social media video is narrated by Kidd, opening with a Bronx Tale-inspired line about wasted potential and closing with the quippy, “What’s next, is now.”

The Kidd course will join the Coore & Crenshaw-designed Red Course, the Doak-designed Blue Course, and the Hanse/Wagner-designed Black Course. The Red and Blue opened in 2012, while Hanse’s work joined the party in 2017. It had been a few years, and an intervening pandemic boom, since Streamsong expanded. But they opened the short course, The Chain, last year and now quickly follow that with this public announcement.

There is demand and there is land, as the video notes (“untouched” and “untapped”). As a random aside, it makes sense Kidd narrated the reveal but the scripting is a little odd with the repeated use of the pronoun “we” in reference to the historical development of the property.

In recent years, we have seen the continued expansion of portfolios at these American destination golf resorts, from Bandon Dunes to Pinehurst to Sand Valley and on. Streamsong remains one of the more accessible spots for some of the largest population centers in the country. In a year-end wrap-up podcast with Andy Johnson and Geoff Shackelford, I lamented some of the monotony in purpose for so much of the boom in golf course building but understand the realities of skyrocketing costs. This is not casting critique or blame on any party involved – architects should take on the work that is out there and these resorts can certainly take on some of the costs. That is the reality on the ground and adding another course would track here. It’s an exciting development for golf course architecture watchers and the golf traveler. What are your reactions to this announcement? What color should they name it?
