It’s been a little over a week since we hosted our Gold Jacket event in Ohio but each and every one of Donald Ross’s greens at Brookside Country Club still ring through my brain. While a couple are incredibly severe, as I discussed in Monday’s Design Notebook, there are still so many amazing complexes throughout the property. The golf course more than lived up to the hype, and we were excited to share the day with a great group.
Here are some lasting impressions from our day at Brookside CC that do not involve the club’s amazing greens. As always, please don’t take it personally if I forget to mention you. There is only so much brain in my head.
– Canton is not in Cleveland and should not be considered anywhere near Cleveland. For all intents and purposes, it’s in an entirely different state.
– It’s good when the honest people come out on top. Before the day started, Daniel Paladino alerted me that Golf Genius was giving him too many shots. We lowered his handicap significantly and he and Jeremy Gordon still won the Net portion of the event. That’s good stuff!
– She didn’t win an event like husband Kent has, but Danielle Monas has some serious game. Consider yourself warned if you ever find yourself in the same pairing as Danielle.
– What’s the plural of Janus? Jani? Either way, David and Jay Janus were great chaps and are welcome back any time.
– It was really cool to have Ohio’s own Justin Lower represent his local area at the event and even better to have a few teams give him a run for his money. Justin and his partner Grant Gates wound up winning by a healthy margin but had some serious competition into the final nine holes. Hopefully it jumpstarts him to some PGA Tour victories this fall.
– Vasanth Ananth hit the most impressive shot I saw to the back pin on No. 16, but it was his parter Tim Schirmer that made the 90-foot birdie putt from the front of the green.
– Mike Caserio showed up bright and early despite delayed flights the day prior that got him to bed after 1 a.m. with an alarm clock set for 5:00 a.m. In hindsight, that’s worth a few shots off the total score. Apologies for the oversight, Mike.
– We would all be better off if we had the positive energy of a Taylor Reed or Joe Mayberry. Both upstanding gentlemen in the community.
– For those who have received your Club TFE member gift, you have Jim Flannery to thank for the bag tag. He started a business in his garage and we have really enjoyed getting to work alongside another small business!
– Nate and Ben Dumm introduced themselves to me as “Yes, like stupid.” I really appreciated that.
