My Favorite Putting Drill
October 27, 2025
I like this type of putting drill because it feels more like a game versus a regimented practice session, thanks Beau. Two pieces of putting that I think are very very crucial are short putts (<6 feet) and lag putting. For me at least, these create the most variance in score during a round. Here are two simple drills that I've used over the years to help with these. Ring of Fire. Set up 4-6 tees at 3 feet around a cup that's moderately flat. Simply get around the circle twice in a row without missing a single 3 footer. Once you accomplish this move back to 5-6 feet and try making it around the circle twice again. This is great because you have to focus on small moderate breaks from each direction. Missing putts inside 5 feet is the most painful thing to do on the putting green and this has helped me a ton. Lag Ladder. Set up a 3-4 foot radius semi-circle behind a cup. Then place tees in 4 foot increments going back to 30+ feet. (You can set up the tee ladder in any number of increments and quantity). Start from the first tee and move back each time you make the putt or get the putt past the hole and inside the semi circle. To win the game you need to climb the ladder to the end and then move all the way back to the start. This really dials in your lag putting control and gets you to hit the ball past the hole giving you a chance to make it. Doing a modified version of this before a round can help get your speed control perfected on the greens for that day.

We need to convince the data center developers to build underground, and then rebuild a better golf course above. Long-term cooling inputs (costs) would be lower for the data center and a better community asset would be available at grade!

I like how your drill creates pressure. I have taken lessons from Mo Pickens, a golf psychologist at Sea Island. He told me a few years ago, don’t ever hit a putt on the green you do not expect to make unless it’s a drill. So, if you putt a 20 footer, walk after it and sink the almost inevitable miss, like you would on the course. Don’t practice missing from 20 feet! Thanks for sharing the game…now, do we have to hunch like Jack to play?

Much like college football should not have rankings until after week 5…

This place is great! I had a chance to play a few years ago and it truly is one of the better places in golf. The 1st tee is about 6 steps from the pro shop with plenty of spectators. They also seem to have events out there quite a bit for locals! You have to love a place that brings the community together.

Thanks. Just my luck. I will fly into Tampa on Feb 15 and spend the next three days at Cabot Citrus. Good trip but knocks me out of the Tree Farm.

Can you tell us the dates of the trip yet? I already have a trip booked in February, so I may be out of luck from the start.

Definitely a must play if driving north to play at Lawsonia or Sand Valley. I've played some top 100 courses which I can't remember 9 holes. Three years after playing Eagle Springs I can remember all 9 holes.
