Will’s Official Weekly Golf Ranking, Vol. 2023.10

Players Championship week brings some volatility in the rankings

Many people have asked me about this so I want to make sure we address it. It’s pronounced wow-grrr, not woah-grrr.

“Wow, WOWgr is such a great ranking system.” – You

Need a recap on the WOWgr rules?

Vol. 2023.10

No. 1 – Rose Zhang (Up 2) – Zhang won the ninth event of her Stanford career this week. Ninth! It’s March of her sophomore year! Zhang needs two more to catch Tiger’s record of 11 career NCAA Tournament victories.

No. 2 – The first 11 holes of Hayden Buckley’s first round at the Players (N/A) – Five under through 11 holes at TPC Sawgrass is great. A hole in one on No. 17 is even better.

No. 3 – Jordan Spieth bunker shot on No. 11 at TPC Sawgrass (N/A) – This was maybe the shot of the first round of the Players. To hit a 30-yard bunker shot and let it perfectly roll up to that tiny back tier was unbelievably impressive.

No. 6 – Collin Morikawa (Up 5) – As a very large Morikawa fan, it brings me great joy to see him back inside the top 10 of WOWgr. He’s been mostly good so far this year but it sounds like he worked his butt off earlier this week and is ready to get back to his previous highs.

No. 9 – Matt Rouches (Up 41) – The newest member of The Fried Egg put together what I think is a very fun video of TPC Sawgrass this week.

No. 17 – Physiotherapists (Up 201) – Min Woo Lee was tied for the lead when he started cramping up at the end of the first round at the Players. Luckily, he had his guy on site to help out.

No. 21 – The 5th, 6th, and 7th holes at TPC Sawgrass (Up 837) – There is a good chance you can’t picture what these three holes look like unless you’re a huge golf fan, but I want to give them a shoutout. No. 4 gets a lot of shine (as it should) and most people would recognize the long par-3 8th, but these three par 4s get lost in the shuffle. All three of them are very interesting driving holes and I always enjoy watching players work their way through this stretch.

No. 33 – Justin Suh (Up 7) – I was chuffed to write about Justin Suh last week and I’m happy to write about him again here this week. He’s very much in the mix at TPC Sawgrass.

No. 875 – Taylormade (Down 731) – Collin Morikawa switched from the Taylormade Stealth 2 back to the four-year-old SIM Driver this week and Rory McIlroy isn’t happy with his current Stealth 2 driver. Seems like carbonwood may be in trouble.

No. 999 – You (Down 914) – Those who watch professional golf know that Billy Horschel tends to creep up and try to surprise the ball when he putts. I’ve decided he sings the Jaws theme song as he approaches the ball. You will always remember the moment you read this and could not watch Billy putt ever again.

No. 1045 – The final seven holes of Hayden Buckley’s first round at the Players (N/A) – After that amazing start, limping home with two bogeys and two double bogeys is not fun. Our guy made four birdies and an ace and shot over par.

RIP – Our sweet Gold Boy (Gone but not forgotten) – Please pour one out for our beloved friend this weekend. If you’re a XXL or just like big tee shirts, we have a couple Gold Boy t-shirts left for you to grab and pay tribute.
