Doak to Build Pinehurst No. 10

Tom Doak's new course in Aberdeen, North Carolina, is set to open in 2024

As you likely heard earlier today, Pinehurst Resort has tapped Tom Doak to design its 10th 18-hole golf course. The property is in Aberdeen, NC, about four miles south of the resort’s main clubhouse, and is, according to Doak, “drastically different from anywhere in Pinehurst”—“bigger, bolder, and more dramatic.” Construction will begin this year, headed up by lead design associate Angela Moser, and the course is expected to open late spring of 2024.

Andy will discuss the project with Tom on an upcoming episode of our “Yolk with Doak” podcast series, but in the meantime, a few scattered thoughts:

– Golf at Pinehurst has traditionally been defined by subtle land and bold design. I’m curious to see whether No. 10’s topography forces Doak to reverse that equation, and how he’ll make the course feel of a piece with the rest of the resort (or whether he’ll even try to do so).

– Keep an eye on Aberdeen. Pinehurst has been looking to develop its 900-acre holdings in the area for years. From the press release: “A variety of development opportunities will be evaluated with town officials, including additional golf, short course, clubhouse, guest cottages, and other lodging.”

– The lead associate gig is a great opportunity for Angela Moser, a longtime Doak and Hanse shaper who is something of a trailblazer in what’s still a male-dominated profession. Moser, a native of Germany, has built cool stuff at Te Arai, Woodhall Spa, St. Patricks Links, Ohoopee Match Club, Streamsong Black, and more. One of the brightest and friendliest people you’ll meet in the industry.

– I doubt anyone believes that Doak’s No. 10 design won’t be excellent, but some have called for Pinehurst to take a flyer on a less prominent architect. It’s easy to understand, however, why an established resort would prefer to go with a sure thing.

About the author

Garrett Morrison

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad gave me a copy of The World Atlas of Golf. That kick-started my obsession with golf architecture. I read as many books about the subject as I could find, filled a couple of sketch books with plans for imaginary golf courses, and even joined the local junior golf league for a summer so I could get a crack at Alister MacKenzie's Valley Club of Montecito. I ended up pursuing other interests in high school and college, but in my early 30s I moved to Pebble Beach to teach English at a boarding school, and I fell back in love with golf. Soon I connected with Andy Johnson, founder of Fried Egg Golf. Andy offered me a job as Managing Editor in 2019. At the time, the two of us were the only full-time employees. The company has grown tremendously since then, and today I'm thrilled to serve as the Head of Architecture Content. I work with our talented team to produce videos, podcasts, and written work about golf courses and golf architecture.
