Weekend Chat: San Francisco vs. Philadelphia, Cincinnati vs. Kansas City

Club TFE rolls on! We picked up some new members this week. If you’re one of them, introduce yourself in the comment section below. Playing somewhere cool this weekend? Recognize the hole in the header image? All good things to talk about.

Club TFE housekeeping

The second wave of early, Club TFE-exclusive registration for Fried Egg Events opens on Monday, January 30, at noon Eastern Time. You’ll be able to sign up for The Scraper at Prairie Dunes, The Junction at CommonGround, and The Gold Jacket at Canton Brookside. HERE’S THE LINK YOU NEED.

We had our first monthly virtual hangout on Wednesday. Good times! Many thanks to those who turned up for it. If you missed it, no worries—we posted the video here. Let us know if you have any suggestions for our future hangouts.

Your Friday question

This Sunday, we’ll see the San Francisco 49ers face off against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL conference championships. Let’s forget about which teams will win. I mean, who cares? (Okay, a lot of people care. Whatever.) Instead, let’s talk about which cities have better golf.

San Francisco vs. Philadelphia is a heavyweight bout, with both metropoles boasting stout lineups of public and private courses. Cincinnati vs. Kansas City is a matchup of under-the-radar but sneaky-decent Midwestern golf scenes.

So: who you got?

It was windy out at Torrey Pines yesterday, and there are some strangers on the leaderboard. Will the title of the Full Swing episode about this week be “Strangers in the Wind”? Free idea for ya, Chad Mumm. Thank you for supporting The Fried Egg.

About the author

Garrett Morrison

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad gave me a copy of The World Atlas of Golf. That kick-started my obsession with golf architecture. I read as many books about the subject as I could find, filled a couple of sketch books with plans for imaginary golf courses, and even joined the local junior golf league for a summer so I could get a crack at Alister MacKenzie's Valley Club of Montecito. I ended up pursuing other interests in high school and college, but in my early 30s I moved to Pebble Beach to teach English at a boarding school, and I fell back in love with golf. Soon I connected with Andy Johnson, founder of Fried Egg Golf. Andy offered me a job as Managing Editor in 2019. At the time, the two of us were the only full-time employees. The company has grown tremendously since then, and today I'm thrilled to serve as the Head of Architecture Content. I work with our talented team to produce videos, podcasts, and written work about golf courses and golf architecture.
