Fried Egg Golf’s Eclectic 18 of 2024

A collection of our favorite holes of the year

by

At the end of every golf season, we love to look back on our travels and compile a composite course, or Eclectic 18, of our favorite holes we played throughout the year. For example, if you played Augusta National, No. 13 may be the 13th hole of your composite course. It’s a great way to think back on where you played over the last year and build a layout filled with your favorite holes and courses. Plus, you may learn something about yourself and what you like out of golf course design.

Below you’ll find a list of our some of our team members’ Eclectic 18s from 2024. We encourage you to build your own as well and share them with us on Instagram or X!

No. 18 – Portmarnock – Par 4, 452 yards

Favorite Hole – There were a few holes that made me audibly go ‘Wow!’ this year but I think I’ll go with #15 at Royal Portrush. Your tee shot is mostly blind as you play up to a beautifully contoured fairway. From here you’re left with one of the most dramatic approaches in golf; a narrow green falls off on the right while the Skerries sit just off the coast in the North Atlantic.

No. 18 – Essex County Club – Par 4, 417 yards
19th hole – Palm Beach Par-3 (Al Fresco)

* Stipulation – can’t use the same course twice

Favorite Hole – I cannot get enough of the par-4 12th hole at Essex County Country Club in New Jersey. The tee shot to the cambered fairway is wonderful and I cannot get enough of the green, a surface that can only be described as a Road Hole-Maiden combo. Any hole that makes you giddy when you stand on the tee is a special one.

No. 17 – Royal Portrush – Par 4, 360 yards
No. 18 – Columbia Country Club – Par 4, 412 yards

Favorite Hole: I did not play a lot of golf this year, but the golf I did get to play after going through this exercise makes me feel quite grateful, to the point of almost embarrassment. We are fortunate here. My favorite hole from the year was the 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, which I birdied and will remember fondly for the rest of my days.

No.17 – Bel-Air Country Club – Par 4, 475 yards
No. 18 – The Lido – Par 4, 449 yards

Favorite Hole: I feel incredibly blessed reflecting on the great golf (courses) I’ve had the privilege to play this year. If I had to pick a favorite, there is just something special about stepping up to that first tee shot at Kingsley. The beauty of the dual fairways separated by a cluster of bunkers sets the tone for a wonderful round in beauty of Northern Michigan.

Abby Liebenthal

No. 1 – Broomsedge – Par 5, 470 yards
No. 2 – Dooks Golf Club – Par 4, 274 yards
No. 3 – Pinehurst, No. 2 – Par 4, 283 yards

No. 11 – Tralee Golf Club – Par 5, 456 yards

No. 14 – Old Barnwell, Kids Course – Par 3, 120 yards
No. 15 – Palmetto Golf Club – Par 4, 233 yards
No. 16 – Lido – Par 3, 179 yards
No. 17 – Ballybunion – Par 4, 332 yards
No. 18 – Inverness Club – Par 4, 305 yards

Favorite Hole: My composite 18 may not be the most architecturally sound as I took a “favorite memories” approach to this. I loved getting to play with my colleagues for the first time at some of these courses and traveling with my husband and Fore the Ladies to Ireland. But my favorite hole will always be Inverness Club’s 18th. It is a short par-4 with a very challenging green, especially with a tough hole location. It’s fun to play aggressive, although I typically end up in one of the greenside bunkers off the tee.

No. 17 – CapRock Ranch – Par 4, 335 yards
No. 18 – St. George’s Golf and CC – Par 5, 542 yards

Favorite Hole – The eighth at Old Barnwell is such a fascinating golf hole. I love how laying back off the tee gives you the best angle into the bowly green. What’s even more fascinating and impressive is the mound and ditch built up the side of the valley in which the hole sits that helps to reduce runoff into the fairway. I love a hole that boasts engineering and artistry at a high level.

No. 17 – Westfield Country Club (North)- Par 4, 498 yards
No. 18 – Pinehurst No. 2– Par 4, 415 yards

Favorite Hole – As a Raleigh resident my North Carolina bias (and lack of Club TFE Events) is showing pretty heavily with my list. This year was my third time playing Pinehurst No. 2 and I finally earned my 2 on No. 2 chip at the par-3 9th, but I also just really love the hole. Good shots are rewarded, poor shots are punished, and you can see some gnarly pins, especially up front.
