Paulie’s Picks: Best Bets for the 2024 British Open

As we’ve already covered some favorites and some longshots, let’s take a final look at a few of the best bets on offer for the week.

Made Cut Parlay: Adam Scott + Min Woo Lee -117 (Fanduel)

Adam Scott has made the cut in 17 of the last 19 Opens, and comes into this event in good form after finishing runner-up last week at the Scottish Open. Min Woo Lee is quietly becoming one of the most consistent players in the world, missing just one cut in the last 14 months. His game fits links golf very well, as he can flight the ball with any height or direction on command.

Corey Conners Top 40 -135 (DraftKings)

As mentioned in the longshots preview, Conners hasn’t missed a cut since the 2023 U.S. Open. He has finished outside the top 40 only five times since then. His supreme bal-lstriking is ideal for this golf course, which should allow him to be in contention this week.

Sepp Straka Top 20 +300 (Fanduel/DraftKings)

As also mentioned in the longshots article, Straka has a lot of upside, as when he plays well he stays near the top of the leaderboard. Straka, the 2023 runner-up to Harman, has four top 10s and two top 20s in his last 12 starts. His game is predicated on elite iron play, a strength which fits Troon very well. +300 seems like too high of a price for him.

Dominic Clemons Low Amateur +700 (Fanduel)

The low amateur market in the Open often gives us great value since many of the amateurs in the field aren’t used to links golf. Dominic Clemons arguably has the best current form of any player in this field, and he also excels at links golf. Clemons, the English native, won the Scottish Men’s Stroke Play at Muirfield in June by 17 shots!!!! Later in the month he finished runner up at the British Amateur Championship. Those performances aren’t even how he got into the Open. He’s here by virtue of being medalist alongside Justin Rose in one of the 36-hole qualifiers. Now, yes, he has to go up against some solid competition, such as the top-ranked amateur in the world, Gordon Sargent. However, Sargent will struggle with links golf especially since Troon will likely mute his extreme length, usually his biggest advantage.

Ernie Els Top Senior +400 (Fanduel)

There are nine seniors in this event. Hamilton, Daly, Leonard, Clarke and Cejka will struggle to be near the cut. That leaves us with Harrington, Mickelson, Cink and Els. Els is arguably in the best form of any of these players, as he has won three of his last five starts on the Champions Tour. He is very familiar with Troon, having finished in the top ten in three Open starts there, including a narrow runner-up finish to Todd Hamilton in 2004.
