Game of the Week: 40 Score

A fun, strategic game to create some stakes amongst large groups of golfers

Ideal number of players: Eight to as many foursomes as you’d like

While 40 Score is not a very well-known game, it can create some stakes amongst large groups of golfers. It’s perfect for a drop-in game at the club or the local muni because breaking the groups up perfectly doesn’t entirely matter.

The work for the game is all established in the lead-up to the day of golf. If you can get this to become a part of your regular weekend game, it is best to have one person take care of the groupings and communicate who is playing. The most important thing is that every group has four players.

The minimum number of players that you need is eight, and the maximum is truly whatever you want to go to (as long as each group is a foursome). For example, I’ve played 40 Score with 48 people before. The game is quite simple once things are set. Each foursome is responsible for counting 40 scores throughout the entire 18 holes. Each player’s handicap is utilized, and they will receive the shots where they lie on the card throughout the round.

It is best to assign one captain in the group who will be responsible for picking which scores to keep for each hole. There is some strategy in this as you obviously don’t ever want to take a bogey, but you also don’t want to be stuck with having to take four scores on No. 18. For reference, 40 scores throughout 18 holes is about 2.2 scores per hole. You are not limited to taking a certain number of scores per hole, so you can use zero or all four. Here is an example of a card that shows the strategy and scoring for a group of four players with handicaps of 0, 3, 5, and 8. The goal is to take every gross or net birdie made, never take a bogey, and leave yourself with only needing to take one score on No. 18 to relieve some pressure.

Example scorecard after a game of 40 Score.

You can set any buy-in, but an easy number is $50per player. The foursome that is the most net under par as a group takes homeall the cash. People who play this game will often set aside half the pot forskins for individual players to make some money if their group is not playingwell. A skins pot at a $50 buy-in with six groups is $600.

Get 40 Score going at your club or your next golf trip to get the masses involved and play for some large stakes at low risk!
